The Oakland Stompers Band plays the hot jazz of the early 1900s with the dance feel of an era when jazz made you move your feet. Drawing from the founders of jazz like Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Lil’ Hardin, and Kid Ory, the Oakland Stompers Band mixes the dense texture of Dixieland with the sweet sounds of early swing and the driving beat of second line street bands.
Leading the band are trombonist Claire Haas and trumpeter Andrew Synder. Together they have played with street brass bands across the Americas, from Brazilian carnival parades to shows right here in the Bay Area with bands like Fanfare Zambaleta and Mission Delirium. Haas is an advocate for women in jazz and plays with Mary Lou’s Apartment, an all women’s big band that plays the music of jazz legends Mary Lou Williams and Melba Liston. Snyder’s background in ethnomusicology brings to the group an attention to performance traditions and the details of what makes the magic in the music. Joining them are guitarist Owen Kelly, whose background in both jazz and rock makes him a versatile and virtuostic player in any style; tubist Tiffany Bayly, whose playing ranges from graceful classical chamber music to laying down fat bass lines with brass bands; drummer Carl Patrick, with a long history across styles, who plays with street brass bands and is a serious student to New Orleans musical traditions. |
